He believes such an ecosystem could serve as a hedge against a future in which the value created by AI is concentrated in the hands of a few. “A strong ecosystem of open models running on consumer hardware is an important defense against a future in which AI-derived value becomes hyper-concentrated and most human thoughts are read and mediated by a few central servers controlled by a few people,” he said.
Criticism of corporate and military AI
Buterin expressed concern about the use of AI for corporate and military purposes. He believes such applications of AI could be more dangerous than those developed in open and decentralized ecosystems. According to him, current advances in AI often cause excitement and anxiety in society, and care must be taken to avoid concentration of power in the hands of a few.

He supports the idea of dividing algorithms into “small” and “large” categories, where prioritizing regulation of large algorithms “seems reasonable.” However, he expressed concern that many current proposals could become "big ones" over time.
