Forecasts and Reality
Tech giant Baidu's CEO, Robin Li, has warned that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is at least 10 years away. In his opinion, current models of data science and machine learning are far from achieving a level of intelligence comparable to that of humans.
Expectations and Reality
While predictions from billionaire Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman point to an earlier date for AGI, Lee says that's unrealistic. He emphasized that AGI remains a significant number of years away.
Differences in Technology Development
Li also noted the significant difference in approaches to AI development in the United States and China. While in the US and Europe companies focus on creating advanced basic models, in China the focus is on the application of technology.
The head of Baidu has called for an acceleration in the pace of artificial intelligence development, saying the current pace is too slow. He stressed the need for faster development of technology in this area.
Lack of Promising Applications
Lee also noted that there is no “killer AI app” yet that can attract mass attention and adoption among users. Despite the rapid development of technology, such applications are not yet a reality in the United States, China, or Europe.
Warning Against Hasty Actions
Lee's remarks echo the warnings of a number of experts, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who also warned against rushing to create superintelligent artificial intelligence.
