Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is actively involved in preparations for the launch of the mainnet L2 solution Taiko. He recently proposed a genesis block, which is an important step in the process of preparing the network for full operation. The genesis block serves as the starting point for blockchains based on Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus.
The role of Genesis Block
The genesis block proposed by Buterin was marked with a note:
“I'm glad to see Taiko launching as a mainstream rollup. Ethereum will benefit from the fact that different approaches are taken at the second level. I appreciate that they [the Taiko team] were pioneers in this direction."
This mechanism differs from Proof-of-Work (PoW) networks, where miners compete to process blocks. In PoS blockchains, validators managed by operators propose blocks, eliminating the need for energy-intensive mining.
What is Taiko?
Taiko is an Ethereum-based Layer 2 (L2) solution designed to improve network scalability and efficiency. It uses different approaches than other solutions, resulting in higher productivity and lower costs.
In March 2024, Taiko developers successfully completed a Series A funding round, raising $15 million to develop the project. These funds are used to further develop and improve the network.
Airdrop and Mainnet Launch
At the end of May 2024, the Taiko team announced an airdrop, which will be an important step before the launch of the public version of the mainnet. It is expected that the release of the main network will take place immediately after the completion of the airdrop, which will allow users to gain access to new features and functionality of Taiko.
Vitalik Buterin, proposing the genesis block, emphasized the importance of the Taiko project for the Ethereum ecosystem. The introduction of different approaches at the L2 level contributes to the development of the entire blockchain industry, making it more flexible and efficient. Financial support and the upcoming airdrop indicate a high level of interest and trust in the project, which promises a successful launch of the mainnet and further growth of Taiko.
