Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticized memcoins associated with famous personalities. He pointed to singer Iggy Azalea's MOTHER token as an example, expressing doubts about their social value and usefulness.

Vitalik Buterin expressed his opinion about the growing number of memecoins associated with various celebrities. According to him, such tokens do not bring any benefit to the crypto community and society as a whole. He believes that any crypto project should not only bring financial benefits, but also give users a “sense of satisfaction and joy,” even if the token loses its real value. In the case of the MOTHER memcoin, Buterin does not see such a possibility.

Examples of Useful Projects

Buterin emphasized that financialization is justified only in cases where the project brings specific benefits to society. He noted that such projects could improve health care, support software, or promote the arts and creativity. As a positive example, he cited the project Stoner Cats, created by actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, which financed the present show and met these requirements.

The Ethereum co-founder highlighted several key requirements that celebrity-related crypto projects must meet:
1. Socially beneficial task: The project must benefit society, and not just enrich celebrities.
2. Interesting mechanics: The project must offer something more than a simple token exchange.
3. Long period of operation: The project must be designed for the long term, at least 10 years.

Buterin's statement

Vitalik Buterin noted that even if over time all the involved tokens are reset to zero, the project should leave participants with a feeling of satisfaction. "Regular businesses and charities achieve this goal all the time! It's a low bar, but the things we create must meet it as well," he said.

Previously, Vitalik Buterin published a large article on memcoins, where he considered various options for using this asset class, including financing public projects and charities. He suggested using memcoins to raise funds for charity, which could be a new approach in the sector.

Opinions of Other Experts

It is worth noting that a16z crypto CTO Eddie Lazarin also spoke negatively about the memcoin sector, pointing out their limited usefulness and potential for abuse.

Vitalik Buterin's criticism of celebrity memecoins highlights the need for a more responsible approach to the creation of crypto projects. Projects must bring real benefits to society and be designed for the long term, and not serve only as a means of enrichment.
