Tech mogul Elon Musk has expressed serious dissatisfaction with the collaboration between Apple and OpenAI. He has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if they include OpenAI products, claiming it poses a security risk.

Musk said the integration of OpenAI's AI services into Apple products is an "unacceptable security breach." He intends to ban the use of Apple products in his firms, including X Corp, Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Company and Neuralink, if the devices are equipped with AI services from OpenAI.

Checking devices at Musk companies

The billionaire said that visitors to his companies will be screened for Apple devices upon entering the building. If unwanted software is detected, the devices will be stored in a so-called Faraday cage. This device shields the equipment from external electromagnetic fields, ensuring that the electric field inside the cell is zero.

New Apple product

On June 10, 2024, Apple introduced a new product - Apple Intelligence, which includes generative AI functions integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS and MacOS. One of the features of the software is the ability to transmit user requests through the Siri voice assistant to ChatGPT from OpenAI. This feature uses the latest version of the OpenAI chatbot.

Elon Musk criticized Apple for its failure to develop its own AI services. He believes that transferring data to a third party such as OpenAI is a "disservice." Musk stated:
"Apple is using the words 'protect your privacy' by sharing this data with third-party AI that they don't understand and can't create themselves. That's not protecting your privacy."

User reaction and Apple's response

Users of the social network X (formerly Twitter) noted that Apple has its own AI services, which are very different from ChatGPT and will be used as the main software in the manufacturer's devices. Apple said the OpenAI startup will not store user requests, and the IP addresses of device owners will be hidden, ensuring a high level of privacy.

Additional Context

Recall that Elon Musk recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. The move, coupled with his latest statements, underscores his deep concerns about data security and privacy when using third-party AI services.

Musk's announcement of a possible ban on Apple products from his companies if AI services from OpenAI are integrated underscores the importance of security and privacy issues in an era of rapid development of artificial intelligence. It also reflects the ongoing battle between leading tech giants for control of data and AI innovation.
