On June 23, 2024, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin attended the Incrypted Conference in Kyiv, which became part of Ukrainian Blockchain Week. During the event, the programmer talked with the editors of Incrypted and answered a number of questions regarding the state of the crypto industry in Ukraine.

Buterin noted that he first visited Kyiv two years ago at the Kyiv Tech Summit and a lot has changed since then. In response to a question about how the narratives in the Ukrainian crypto community have changed, he emphasized the significant progress made by local developers. According to him, they are actively creating new solutions, mastering complex technologies and have become more mature in their work.

“Yesterday I was at ETHKyiv and saw very high level developers. They were interested in working with builders and search engines, asking complex technical questions about interacting with government ID cards. I’m definitely impressed with how things are going,” Buterin said.

Ukrainian contribution to the Ethereum ecosystem

Buterin also noted that almost every major project in the Ethereum ecosystem involves people from Ukraine. The Ethereum Foundation employs at least two Ukrainians, which emphasizes the significance of the Ukrainian contribution to the industry.

“Of course, Ukrainians continue to have a great influence on the entire industry,” he added.

The co-founder of Ethereum also spoke about memcoins and answered a question about the positive aspects of this asset class. He admitted that he has nothing against the “fun” that such tokens offer, but emphasized the need to demonstrate sustainability and focus on the long-term existence of projects.

“If I were against it, I wouldn’t have Dogecoin, but it’s like the OG of all memecoins, and I still hold it,” the programmer admitted.

The future of memecoins

Speaking about the future of memcoins, Buterin said that in order to survive in the coming years, these projects must offer something new to the community and abandon speculation in favor of a long-term perspective.

On June 22, Vitalik Buterin arrived in Ukraine and attended the ETHKyiv hackathon, organized by the Incrypted team as part of Ukrainian Blockchain Week 2024. This visit became a significant event for the Ukrainian crypto community and confirmed the importance of Ukraine in the global cryptocurrency ecosystem.
