Partnership for Progress
AI startup OpenAI has announced a partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to conduct biological research. LANL, known for its involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb, has joined forces with OpenAI to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can help scientists in their daily work.
OpenAI said its collaboration with LANL aims to evaluate the potential of AI models and how they can help scientists. Representatives of the project said: “We believe that AI can greatly increase the speed of research for the benefit of science.”
AI use cases
OpenAI provided examples of the use of AI technologies in practical applications. Moderna, for example, uses multimodal AI models to conduct clinical trials and analyze large data sets. Color Health has created an AI assistant based on GPT-4o that helps healthcare providers with cancer screening and treatment.
Nick Generos, representative of the group's information systems and modeling team, called AI a powerful tool that can bring benefits to the field of science. He stressed that the use of AI is fraught with risks, and planned research will help understand these risks and take appropriate action.
Research with GPT-4o
According to the release, OpenAI and LANL will study the potential use of GPT-4o in the laboratory. Researchers want to find out how language patterns can help people perform tasks using vocal and visual cues. GPT-4o is the latest language model from OpenAI that allows users to interact with a chatbot in real time using voice, images and text.
OpenAI officials said the upcoming partnership with LANL will build on previous experience in the biosciences field. Possible experimental tasks include transformation, culture and separation of living cells.
History and transformation of LANL
LANL is one of sixteen national laboratories of the U.S. Department of Energy, founded in 1943 with the goal of developing the world's first atomic bomb. For almost 50 years, the laboratory was primarily involved in military research. After the end of the Cold War, LANL shifted its focus to developments in the fields of medicine, space, and renewable energy.
The partnership between OpenAI and LANL opens up new opportunities for the use of AI in biological research. The joint effort aims to explore how AI can accelerate scientific research and help solve complex problems. This collaboration highlights the importance of integrating modern technologies into scientific research to achieve significant breakthroughs.
Earlier it became known that TIME magazine articles will be used to train OpenAI AI products. The incident with actress Scarlett Johansson, who accused an AI startup of copying her voice, was also highlighted.
