Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently expressed concern about the lack of investment flow into Web3 infrastructure projects, especially those related to open source. In his new publication on the social network Warpcast, he noted that information about a significant flow of investment in these projects is not true.

Investor preferences

Buterin explained that investors are more likely to direct their funds to certain niches that bring quick profits. In his opinion, this creates the illusion of active investment in infrastructure, when in fact the funds go to projects that receive spin-offs from more popular and profitable areas.

“In fact, everything happens like this. People want to invest in “casinos” but not feel remorse. Therefore, they direct capital to a subset of infrastructure projects that receive spin-off profits from the casino,” Buterin said.

Problems of open-source projects

Buterin emphasized that this leads to insufficient funding for open source projects. He believes that infrastructure that is not based on open-source does not benefit the ecosystem in the long term.

“Any infrastructure that is not open source is not very good for the ecosystem,” Buterin concluded.

Back in December 2023, Vitalik Buterin already said that Web3 had lost its original vision. He expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the sphere is moving away from the principles of decentralization that underlie it. This deviation, in his opinion, interferes with the full development of the ecosystem.

Speech at Incrypted Conference 2024

On June 23, 2024, Vitalik Buterin attended the main crypto event of the summer - Incrypted Conference 2024, where he gave an exclusive interview. In his speech, he again touched on the topic of investment and the importance of supporting open source projects.

Interest in Vitalik Buterin and his contribution to the development of blockchain technologies remains high. The world premiere of the documentary film “Vitalik: An Ethereum Story” is planned for September 2024, which will tell in detail about the life and achievements of the co-founder of Ethereum.

Thus, Vitalik Buterin continues to raise important questions about the distribution of investments in Web3 and the need to support open source projects to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem.
