The Nigerian government has announced the launch of an annual program to train citizens in the basics of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology. As part of this initiative, which started on July 23, 2024, it is planned to train 1,000 people in the country. Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima said the program is aimed at promoting the country as an economic leader and developing innovation.

Purpose of the program

In his statement, Kashim Shettima stressed that Nigeria strives not only to catch up with global trends, but also to get ahead of them. "We are poised to overtake the rest of the world. This initiative gives beneficiaries the chance to become part of the global workforce, driving innovation that will shape our future," he said.

To implement this ambitious program, the Nigerian government has partnered with technology company Gluwa. This cooperation is aimed at providing quality training and introducing advanced technologies into various spheres of life in the country.

Grants for small and medium businesses

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced grants of 150,000 Nigerian naira (approximately $90) to support small and medium-sized enterprises. These grants are intended to stimulate the development of the fintech ecosystem in the country.

In July 2024, the Nigeria National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) revealed its plans to create research centers specializing in the study of artificial intelligence, Internet of things and blockchain. These centers will become an important link in the country’s educational and innovation infrastructure.

The growing popularity of cryptocurrencies

According to the local financial regulator, one in three Nigerians uses cryptocurrencies. Digital assets are significantly expanding financial opportunities for more than 38 million people who do not have bank accounts. At the beginning of June 2024, Nigeria became the leader in the number of search queries on the topic of Bitcoin, even surpassing El Salvador, where the first cryptocurrency was recognized as an official means of payment.

The launch of an AI and blockchain training program, as well as support for SMEs through grants, demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to innovation and technological development. It is expected that these initiatives will help the country take a leading position in the global economy and provide its citizens with new opportunities for professional growth and financial well-being.
