The Worldcoin cryptocurrency project team announced the launch of an identity verification service via the World ID protocol for residents of Austria. This step became part of the strategy to expand services in Europe.

On July 31, 2024, the Worldcoin Foundation installed Orb scanners in several locations in the Austrian capital Vienna. Using these devices, Austrian residents over 18 years old can undergo the identity verification procedure, joining 6.3 million users around the world who have already successfully completed the World ID scan.

Expansion of the Service in Europe

Austria became the second country after Germany to launch the World ID identification protocol. According to the project representatives, identity verification using World ID software is “the first and most fundamental step in establishing a person’s digital identity.” The introduction of this service in Austria strengthens Worldcoin’s position in the European market, offering a convenient and secure way to confirm identity.

The Worldcoin project has faced regulatory challenges in several European countries. In Spain, Worldcoin’s operations have been restricted until the end of 2024 or until the investigation is completed. In Portugal, biometric data collection by Orb devices has been temporarily banned. Despite this, the Worldcoin team continues to advance its technology, striving to comply with all regulatory requirements.

Security and Audit

The Orb scanner has undergone an independent audit by Trail of Bits, which showed that the device does not contain critical vulnerabilities. This fact underlines the reliability and security of the technologies used by Worldcoin.

Worldcoin developers have also made the source code of the System for Multi-Party Computing (SMPC) open source. This initiative is aimed at improving the security of biometric data, which is an important step in strengthening user trust in the service.

The launch of the World ID verification service in Austria demonstrates Worldcoin’s commitment to expanding its presence in Europe and improving access to digital identity. Despite regulatory challenges in some countries, the project continues to develop, introducing safe and innovative solutions for users. Open source and successful audit of Orb scanners highlight Worldcoin's commitment to transparency and security, which is key to the continued growth and adoption of their technology.
