Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) hinted that presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris would promote a “balanced approach” to digital asset regulation if she defeats Republican nominee Donald Trump this November. The lawmaker made the announcement at the Crypto For Harris town hall on Wednesday evening.

“We are working hard to create a comprehensive cryptocurrency framework that allows entrepreneurs and companies to innovate responsibly while protecting consumers and preventing bad actors,” Gillibrand told crypto event attendees. “There has been significant progress, and we’ve heard members of this administration encourage our work. Like you, they understand that regulatory clarity is good for everyone. I’m confident that the incoming Harris administration will understand and promote this balanced approach.”

Gillibrand was just one of many political figures to speak at the Democratic Caucus’ first town hall this week, which featured a keynote address from New York Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) who pledged to pass key crypto legislation this year. “Cryptocurrency is here to stay, no matter what, so Congress needs to get it right,” Schumer said.

The House of Representatives recently passed the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21), but no formal, broad-based regulatory framework for crypto has been created, raising concerns in the crypto community that the lack of clarity could drive crypto companies overseas.

While Harris has remained tight-lipped about her stance on digital assets, critics have argued that her affiliation with the Biden administration could hurt her chances of winning over crypto voters due to her support for strict crypto regulations.

However, billionaire Mark Cuban recently told Politico that Harris could be more “open” to embracing the digital asset world.

“The feedback I’m getting, which is certainly not confirmed by the vice president, is that she’s going to be much more open to business, [artificial intelligence], cryptocurrency, and government as a service,” Cuban said. “Changing that policy changes the message and sends the message that she’s in charge and she’s open, literally, to business.”
