The arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France has attracted industry attention. Durov has received support from key figures, including Justin Sun. Sun has proposed creating a “FreePavel DAO” to defend Durov legally, combining blockchain principles with crowdfunding for legal aid.

“We must show unity in the crypto industry by creating a FreePavel DAO to help Telegram founder Pavel Durov legally gain his freedom,” Sun said, noting that the organization should be fully decentralized and community-backed.

Durov was detained in France, and while no formal charges have been filed, the arrest is believed to be related to content moderation on the Telegram platform. Meanwhile, Telegram supported its CEO, calling for a quick solution to the problem and stressing that the company complies with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act. It was also noted that Durov regularly travels to Europe and “has nothing to hide.”

Sun also called on Elon Musk and Mario Naufal to join the initiative.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed concern that Durov’s arrest could set a dangerous precedent that would negatively affect user privacy and freedom of communication in Europe. Buterin noted that the charges are related to “insufficient moderation” and failure to hand over user data, which he considers a worrying sign for the future of software and communication freedom in Europe.
