The UAE has asked the French government to provide consular services to Durov, who was arrested on Saturday at Le Bourget airport in Paris. Durov, who holds citizenship in several countries, including the UAE, is facing serious charges brought by French prosecutors. He faces 12 charges, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and distributing child exploitation content.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the situation and has formally asked the French authorities to provide Durov with all necessary consular services. The ministry’s statement emphasized that caring for citizens and protecting their interests is a priority for the UAE.
French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the arrest, stressed France's commitment to protecting freedom of expression, but noted that these freedoms must be respected within the law to ensure the protection of all citizens.
Under French law, Durov's detention can be extended by two days until August 28, when investigators will decide whether to formally charge him or release him.
Meanwhile, TRON founder Justin Sun has proposed creating a "FreePavel DAO" to provide legal defense for Durov, pledging to donate $1 million. He has also reached out to X CEO Elon Musk and social media commentator Nawfal to join the effort to free Durov.
It's worth noting that Telegram-linked cryptocurrency Toncoin lost more than 20% of its market value following Durov's arrest, but has partially recovered at the time of writing and is trading at $5.45.
The next 48 hours will be crucial as French authorities decide on the fate of Telegram's founder, which could impact both the platform itself and international diplomacy.
