Telegram founder Pavel Durov has finally broken his silence, sending his first public statement since his high-profile arrest in France in August.
The entrepreneur expressed surprise at the arrest, noting that Telegram has a legal representative in France who handles all regulatory inquiries and questions.
Durov, who is a French citizen, also said that French authorities had many ways to contact him without involving law enforcement, and noted that he is a regular visitor to the French consulate in Dubai.
The Telegram founder also emphasized that the company is ready to leave jurisdictions that are hostile to Telegram's mission to protect freedom of speech and expression. Durov said via his Telegram channel:
"We are ready to leave markets that are incompatible with our principles, because we are not doing this for money. We are driven by the desire to make a difference and protect the fundamental rights of people, especially where these rights are violated."
