Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson will meet with Argentina’s President Javier Millay in October to discuss the role of cryptocurrencies in shaping the country’s economy.

The meeting, which will take place on October 19, will be held as part of Tech Forum Argentina, where Hoskinson will discuss the potential of blockchain technology to transform economic and social systems.

The talks will cover a variety of topics, including Argentina’s approach to technology and the potential adoption of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Cardano Strengthens Ties with Argentina

The upcoming meeting will strengthen Cardano’s already strong ties with Argentina.

The Cardano Foundation has been active in the country, establishing multiple partnerships to advance local blockchain adoption.

The foundation signed a new agreement in June 2024 to further integrate blockchain technology in Argentina.

It’s worth noting that Bitcoin has a long history in Argentina, with one of the first major cryptocurrency companies, BitPay, developing its Copay wallet there in 2012.

President Millay, known for his pro-crypto stance, has publicly supported Cardano on social media.

In May 2024, he reposted a Cardano-related post from Dario Epstein and has since shared several posts from Hoskinson himself.

Millay confirmed his participation in Tech Forum Argentina via a social media post on September 17.

These developments coincide with Cardano’s progress toward achieving decentralized governance as part of the Voltaire era of the project’s roadmap.

On September 1, Cardano underwent its first hard fork of this era, introducing community-driven governance mechanisms.

Another upcoming network update is the Leios update, which Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson says will make the platform “faster than Solana without losing its decentralization.”

The final Cardano Constitution, which will formalize these voting features on the blockchain, is expected to be approved in December 2024.

Argentina to Include Blockchain in School Curriculum

In August, the Buenos Aires Ministry of Education, in partnership with the ETH Kipu Foundation, introduced blockchain technology and Ethereum to the school curriculum.

The initiative, which puts Argentina one step ahead of its Latin American neighbors, aims to equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in the emerging tech economy.

In addition to school curricula, the partnership includes the development of an online course on Solidity, a programming language used to develop Ethereum-based applications.

The course will be available to 500 students over the age of 18, giving them the tools to actively participate in the Ethereum developer community.

Earlier this year, Millay decided to exclude a proposed cryptocurrency tax bill from the controversial omnibus reform package in an attempt to speed up the approval of the reform package.

The bill, known as “Ley Ómnibus,” or the “Law of Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines,” originally contained provisions requiring taxpayers to declare ownership of previously undisclosed assets, including cryptocurrencies.

However, Interior Minister Guillermo Francos announced the removal of these provisions, citing the need for rapid economic development and legislative efficiency as driving factors in the decision.
