The extent of the fakes remains unclear, but Chinese media claim that the cost of spoiled products exceeds $ 2 million
In China, law enforcement agencies have covered an underground center for cleaning video cards used in cryptocurrency mining. This is written by the Chinese edition of ITHome with reference to the press service of the police. During the raid in the city of Binzhou, local security forces detained more than two dozen participants in the scheme, but only seven of them were prosecuted.
In the warehouse of the attackers, law enforcement officers found many buildings of mining farms. Fraudsters took out damaged video cards from the cases, tinted their chipsets and repackaged them for sale under the guise of new ones. The full scale of the scheme is unclear, as the covered warehouse may be just one of several locations used by the criminal network. During the raid, the security forces counted equipment worth $ 2 million.
According to police, a large number of people participated in the scheme. It took about a year to catch the fraudsters, since different people were responsible for each individual part of the scheme: some bought "burnt" video cards, others cleaned and tested them, and others were engaged in packaging goods.
The editors wrote that Chinese attackers are engaged in counterfeiting video cards back in early 2023. Then observers of IT equipment found out that unscrupulous sellers began to paint video card chips, to expose them under the guise of new ones.
With the help of painting, attackers hide the yellow tint on the chips, which manifests itself due to long operation at high temperatures. What's more, scammers even paint the memory chips themselves to give them the appearance of a fresh product. Inexperienced buyers were urged not to rely solely on warranty cards, as Chinese attackers can forge them.
