The creator of Tornado Cash was previously found guilty of developing and operating a cryptocurrency mixer, which, according to the prosecution, facilitated the laundering of more than $1.2 billion. The court sentenced him to five years in prison. However, the developer himself denies the charges and has filed an appeal. His lawyers have repeatedly insisted on bail pending the completion of the appeal process, but their requests remain unsatisfied.

At the same time, attention to Tornado Cash is increasing in the United States. Members of the House of Representatives have asked the Treasury Department to provide a report on the mixer's ongoing activities. Despite the current sanctions, large sums are reportedly still flowing through the service. In the first six months of this year, the volume of cryptocurrency transferred through Tornado Cash reached $1.8 billion, which is 45% more than the figure for the entire previous year.

In parallel, lawyers for another Tornado Cash co-founder, Roman Shtorm, have filed a lawsuit in the New York District Court seeking to dismiss charges of aiding in the laundering of more than $1 billion. The situation highlights the growing scrutiny of cryptocurrency mixers and their role in financial crimes by both law enforcement and lawmakers.
