In January 2022, after taking office as mayor, Adams decided to take his first three paychecks in Bitcoin and Ethereum. At the time, the decision was widely ridiculed, as the combined value of the cryptocurrencies was about $30,000. However, today, with Bitcoin surpassing the $100,000 mark, the mayor is confidently claiming that he was right.

“You laughed at me when I chose Bitcoin for my paycheck. Now, how do you like it?” Adams said, adding that his crypto assets reached $54,999 by the end of 2023. Although he does not disclose how much cryptocurrency he currently has, the mayor is confident that his choice was justified.

Adams took the opportunity to remind the skeptics: “A lot of people said I made a mistake. And now you probably wish you had done the same!”

Despite his optimism about the rise in Bitcoin, the mayor’s reputation has been hit. He has been accused of corruption and campaign finance violations, which he categorically denies.

It’s worth noting that Adams is not the only mayor associated with cryptocurrencies. His Miami colleague, Francis Suarez, also received a salary in Bitcoin, but is more reserved in his statements on the topic.

In the meantime, Adams continues to be one of the most talked about figures in New York, balancing between accusations and the successes he attributes to cryptocurrencies.
