In March, a court ruled that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin. The ruling came after he attempted to gain intellectual property rights worth £900 billion, including the copyright to the original Bitcoin white paper and key databases containing the codes.

The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) filed a lawsuit against Wright in the UK court to stop his claims to be Satoshi. During the trial, Wright was opposed by influential figures in the crypto community, including Adam Back, the creator of the Proof-of-Work consensus model.

COPA won the case, and the court officially declared Wright “not Satoshi.” During his legal campaign, Wright committed contempt of court, which became a key point in the sentencing.

According to the Guardian, Wright refused to provide his physical location when he was sentenced. The hearing was held virtually, and he has stated his intention to appeal the court’s decision.
