In September 2023, Salameh pleaded guilty in a criminal case related to the bankruptcy of the FTX crypto exchange. He was accused of conspiracy to conduct illegal donations and operate an unlicensed money transmission business.
Initially, in May 2024, the Southern District of New York Court sentenced Salameh to 90 months in prison, which is 7.5 years. He began serving his sentence in October and was supposed to be released in April 2032. However, the Federal Bureau of Prisons website now lists a new release date of March 2031. The reasons for the change in the term are not specified.
Recall that FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) was found guilty on all charges in November 2023. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, Bankman-Fried's lawyers filed an appeal.
Earlier, other key figures at FTX also pleaded guilty in similar cases: former head of Alameda Research Caroline Ellison, FTX CTO Gary Wang, and head of engineering Nishad Singh.
