The explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck parked at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has become the subject of an investigation as a possible terrorist attack. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that either a bomb or fireworks were the cause of the explosion. Explosive materials were in the back of a rented truck, which rules out a direct technical malfunction of the car, Musk noted in a post on the X platform (former Twitter).

Police confirmed that firework mortars, canisters of gasoline, and camping fuel were found in the back of the Cybertruck. The identity of the driver who died as a result of the explosion has not yet been established. The investigation is being conducted jointly with federal, state, and local authorities. Investigators are trying to determine whether the incident was terrorist in nature. According to police, at this point it appears to be an isolated incident with no indication of a larger conspiracy.

The explosion occurred on the morning of January 1, around 8:40 a.m. local time, a few hours after the end of the New Year's Eve festivities. The Cybertruck pulled into a hotel parking area, almost at the glass entrance doors. Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that after smoke began to emerge from the vehicle, a powerful explosion occurred, injuring seven people and killing the driver.

The Las Vegas incident occurred shortly after the attack in New Orleans, where a man waving an ISIS flag drove a rented Ford into a crowd on Bourbon Street. That attack left at least 15 people dead.

The FBI is also investigating the New Orleans incident as an act of terrorism, but there is currently no evidence to link the two events. Both vehicles involved in the incidents were rented through the Turo platform, sources said.

These events highlight the complexity of modern threats law enforcement faces, especially during holidays and public events.
