Sewell first attracted the attention of a wide audience with his three-minute prayer at Trump’s inauguration, which coincided with Martin Luther King Day. His speech was filled with references to the famous “I Have a Dream” speech and the Declaration of Independence. The pastor expressed gratitude for the “millimeter miracle” that saved Trump from an assassination attempt in July, and emphasized that America will begin to dream again.

Later, in a short video on the X platform, Sewell announced the launch of his $Lorenzo token. He urged people to purchase the coin to support the ministry, adding that “King’s dream can only become a reality if we recognize that many are living a nightmare.”

Sewell has long been known for his vocal support of Trump, attending Christian events, speaking at the Republican National Convention, and accompanying the future president to churches. Before that, he was a pastor at 180 Church, where his political views were controversial. One of the conflicts even led to Sewell being detained by police when he tried to enter the church after opponents changed the locks.

The pastor’s scandalous reputation is not only due to his political activism. In the past, Sewell was a gang leader, but a spiritual epiphany in 1999 changed his life. He does not separate religion and politics, believing that the Gospel is a political message, and the Bible is a political book.

Despite statements that $Lorenzo tokens will be locked in a liquidity pool to generate income and develop the project, X users reacted extremely negatively to the launch. A video of a pastor asking people to “do him a favor” and buy the coin has sparked a wave of vitriolic comments.

Many are comparing $Lorenzo to the TRUMP and MELANIA tokens, which also came under fire after their launch. Journalist Nick Carter has previously raised concerns that such coins could be used by outsiders for manipulation and bribery. Whether $Lorenzo will become a tool of influence remains an open question.

The crypto community points to the growing reputation of meme coins as speculative vehicles, where excitement and fraud overshadow technological potential. Judging by the reaction, Sewell’s token is the latest example of this trend.
