Hackers gained access to the account of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and used it to promote a fake token called BRAZIL. This token was developed on the Pump.Fun platform, known as a “memcoin factory”, operating on the Solana network. The attackers tried to evoke patriotic feelings among Brazilian citizens, reminiscent of the approach of Donald Trump, who previously issued his own digital assets.
A message published on behalf of Bolsonaro stated: “It's time to celebrate our country like never before! I am launching a digital currency BRAZIL, which symbolizes the pride, freedom and strength of the Brazilian people.” To enhance the effect, they attached a photo taken during the G20 summit, where Bolsonaro is pictured together with Trump.
After the successful attack, the scammers achieved a sharp increase in interest in the token. In a short period of time, BRAZIL increased in price by 10,000%, and the attackers managed to collect more than 1.3 million Brazilian reals, equivalent to approximately $220,000, from gullible users.
However, Bolsonaro soon regained control of his account, and the fake post was deleted. Despite this, the financial losses of citizens remained significant.
This incident occurred against the backdrop of an initiative by the Central Bank of Brazil aimed at limiting the transfer of stablecoins such as USDT to non-custodial wallets, including the popular MetaMask. These measures are discussed as a way to protect users from financial risks associated with fraud and unauthorized transactions.
