Ondo, one of the leaders in the field of real-world asset tokenization (RWA), has launched the Ondo Global Markets (Ondo GM) platform, which will allow investors to purchase digital versions of US stocks and ETFs. The platform will offer access to more than 1,000 financial instruments traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ, including Apple and Tesla shares.

According to the company, each token in Ondo GM will be backed by the corresponding underlying asset at a ratio of 1:1. Tokenized assets will be transferable in a similar way to stablecoins, without geographical restrictions.

The transition of traditional securities to the blockchain space provides new opportunities for investors, reducing transaction costs and removing barriers to global access. As Ondo notes, the current system limits millions of potential participants in financial markets, inhibiting the development of innovation. Blockchain, on the contrary, increases the transparency and efficiency of asset management.

According to Defillama, Ondo is one of the leading projects in the RWA sphere, holding more than $650 million in locked assets (TVL). The entire RWA market is valued at $8.4 billion.

Major players support tokenization

The emergence of Ondo GM comes at a time of active discussion of tokenization in the financial sector. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink called on the SEC to speed up the approval process for tokenized stocks and bonds. He emphasized that the introduction of such instruments will significantly change the investment landscape.

BlackRock has already launched its own products in this area. In particular, the company issued BUILD tokens, which are tokenized US Treasury bonds. According to Rwa.xyz, as of February 5, the volume of these assets amounted to $620 million. Franklin Templeton is also actively developing similar initiatives, holding $550 million in RWA bonds.

According to Bloomberg forecasts, leading management companies, including BlackRock and WisdomTree, expect to see increased interest in tokenized assets in 2024. In conditions of market instability, investors often choose stablecoins, but RWA instruments with yield may become a more attractive alternative.

VanEck in its forecast for 2025 suggests that the volume of the tokenized securities market will exceed $50 billion, while at the end of 2024 this figure was $12 billion. The company is confident that decentralization and transparency of the blockchain will make the financial system more efficient and accessible.
