In the first half of 2024, the total amount of funds stolen using ransomware increased by almost 2.4% compared to the same period in 2023. A significant part of this amount was $75 million associated with the activities of the Dark Angels hacker group.

However, in the second half of the year, there was a significant decrease in extortion revenue, which led to an overall decrease in the income of criminal groups. According to analysts at Chainalysis, one of the main reasons for this trend was the sanctions imposed on the Russian platform Cryptex, as well as the actions of the German authorities, who blocked the servers of 47 illegal crypto exchanges. These measures significantly complicated the process of laundering stolen funds for attackers.

In addition, experts have drawn attention to the growing gap between the amounts demanded by cybercriminals and the actual payments received. Victims of extortion attacks increasingly prefer to send criminals amounts significantly lower than requested.
