A US court has sentenced hacker Evan Frederick Light, who stole $37 million in cryptocurrency by hacking into the servers of a company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Using stolen client credentials, Light gained access to their digital assets and withdrew the funds to anonymous accounts.

The investigation established that the criminal did not act alone, but the identities of his accomplices remain unknown. To hide the traces of the crime, he used cryptocurrency mixing services, which made it difficult to track the stolen assets. In September last year, Light pleaded guilty.

“This man stole millions, depriving honest citizens of their savings. "He destroyed countless lives while committing crimes from his mother's basement in Indiana. His 20-year sentence demonstrates that justice is on the side of the victims and that cybercriminals should seriously consider the consequences," said U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell in a statement.

A recent trial in the Southern District of New York also resulted in the conviction of the Forcount co-founder. For participating in a crypto pyramid scheme and stealing more than $8 million, she received 30 months in prison and was ordered to pay a fine of $231,000.
