The attackers used his X page to promote a fake meme coin that was supposedly linked to the youngest son of former US President Barron Trump. WLFI representatives quickly responded, warning users about the scam:

"Please do not participate. We will fix the issue as soon as possible."

Commentators noted that the project team responded in just seven minutes.

After regaining control of his account, Witkoff confirmed the hack. He expressed gratitude for the assistance of James Musk, the brother of X owner Elon Musk, as well as MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright and the president of the payment service Keith Grossman.

Despite the prompt intervention, some users have already managed to invest in the fake token and lost money. Among the victims was American actor and blogger Taylor Caniff, who reported a loss of $3,600.

Earlier, in January, Donald Trump launched the official TRUMP meme coin ahead of the inauguration. According to the NYT, over 19 days, investors suffered a total loss of $2 billion. By early February, the token's value had fallen by 75% from its peak.

A similar fate befell the MELANIA token, associated with former US First Lady Melania Trump.
