In January 2025, more than 600,000 new tokens entered the crypto market, an all-time high. CoinGecko co-founder Bobby Ong noted that this figure is 12 times higher than the average number of tokens issued monthly from 2022 to 2023, when their number did not exceed 50,000.

The sharp increase began in late 2024, when the monthly token issue reached 400,000. In January 2025, this figure rose even higher. Ong cites the active use of Pump.fun on the Solana blockchain and SunPump on the Tron network, which allow for quick and easy launch of new digital assets, as one of the main reasons for this.

Market experts are concerned about this rapid increase in the number of tokens. They note that the emergence of hundreds of thousands of new assets leads to the dispersion of liquidity and investor attention. Unlike previous market cycles, in the current environment, new large altcoins are almost never created, as traders are forced to distribute funds between many small projects.

According to CoinGecko, if the current growth rate continues, the total number of tokens could exceed 1 billion within the next five years.

In addition to the growth of cryptocurrencies, the ecosystem of blockchains and decentralized exchanges is also expanding. Between 5 and 10 new blockchains are launched every month, and in May 2024, their number reached a record 17. Also, in March last year, 89 new decentralized crypto exchanges were registered, which indicates the continuing expansion of the market.
