The Tron blockchain will soon introduce the ability to transfer USDT for free, paid directly in the stablecoin. According to Tron founder Justin Sun, the launch of the feature is scheduled for early March.
"Next week, we will introduce Tron Gas Free, a mechanism that allows you to pay fees in USDT without having to use TRX," Sun wrote on February 25 on the X social network.
The head of the Tron ecosystem called on crypto project and crypto wallet developers interested in integrating the new feature to contact the support service of JustLend DAO, Tron's decentralized lending platform.
Tron was previously considered one of the most accessible blockchains for USDT transfers of the TRC-20 standard, significantly exceeding the alternative ERC-20 standard on the Ethereum network in cost. However, in recent months, the situation has changed - since the end of 2024, fees on the Tron network have increased significantly, reaching a maximum of $9 per transaction on December 9.
According to current Tether data, USDT transfer fees on the Tron network remain the highest among all supported blockchains, fluctuating between $3.2 and $6.5. For comparison, the USDT transaction fee on Ethereum is approximately $0.40, and on Aptos - only $0.0001.
"Calculating the cost of gas on the Tron network is complicated by a system that requires "energy" and "bandwidth" for TRC-20 USDT transfers. Regular users who make transfers only a few times a month often face a lack of energy in their wallets," the Tron service page states, which also offers options for reducing fees.
The development of a mechanism for paying for gas with stablecoins instead of TRX has been underway since mid-2024. The launch of this feature was originally planned for the fourth quarter of last year.
A similar approach was previously implemented in the TON blockchain. In the summer of 2024, the network developers implemented the W5 Smart Wallet standard, which allows paying for USDT transactions within the TON ecosystem without the need to hold Toncoin to pay for gas.
