The UK police reported a new cryptocurrency fraud scheme, which resulted in nine victims. The criminals used the leaked personal data to file false reports of alleged crimes. They then contacted the victims, posing as law enforcement officers, and announced the start of an investigation.

During the conversation, the scammers convinced the owners of cryptocurrency wallets to expect a call from an “official representative” who was supposed to explain further actions. At the next stage, a “support specialist” contacted the victims and, under the pretext of protecting assets, requested a seed phrase. Having trusted the attackers, the owners of digital assets handed over control of their funds.

"With the help of the obtained data, the fraudsters restored access to wallets, transferred funds and concealed their movement, eliminating the possibility of a return," the police specified.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Paulson emphasized that it is strictly forbidden to transfer personal data over the phone to unknown persons. He also recommended immediately reporting suspicious calls and fraudulent attempts to law enforcement.

It is worth noting that in February, Binance CEO Richard Teng warned about a new wave of attacks related to seed phrases. According to him, the attackers send out fake notifications about a compromised wallet, offering to "secure" assets, but in fact gain control over the funds.
