As part of his new role, Zhao will advise the government on cryptocurrency regulation, infrastructure, education, and the adoption of digital assets.
On April 7, Zhao met with representatives of the PCC and Pakistani government officials, including the ministers of finance, law, and information technology, as well as the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. His appointment was formally announced at the meeting.
Pakistan has previously taken a hardline stance on cryptocurrencies, effectively banning their use. However, the authorities have decided to change their approach and legalize digital assets. The initiative to integrate cryptocurrencies into the country's financial system was launched after Bilal bin Saqib became the chief adviser to the finance minister at the PCC in March.
“Pakistan is opening up new horizons in the financial sector. Who better than Changpeng Zhao, the man behind the world’s largest crypto exchange, to help us move forward?” Saqib said, commenting on Zhao’s appointment.
In his new role, Zhao will work with government agencies and private companies to create an inclusive and competitive crypto ecosystem. His work involves advising on regulations, infrastructure, educational initiatives, and the implementation of innovative solutions.
“Pakistan is a country with a population of 240 million people, where more than 60% are under 30 years old. The potential here is huge,” Zhao emphasized at the meeting.
It is worth noting that a few days earlier, Zhao also became an adviser to the Kyrgyz government on cryptocurrency and blockchain issues. As part of the cooperation, he will provide recommendations on the creation of infrastructure, implementation of technologies and educational projects, as well as participate in the development of policies aimed at managing crypto assets and ensuring security.
“This is an important step to strengthen the country's technological base, introduce innovations and train specialists in the field of blockchain and cybersecurity,” said Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov via the X social network.
Confirming the signing of the memorandum of cooperation, Changpeng Zhao said that his goal is to expand the use of cryptocurrencies in various countries. He added that he is already collaborating with several governments, advising them on crypto regulation and blockchain technologies beyond digital asset trading.
Since September 2024, after being released from prison, where he spent four months as a result of proceedings with the US Department of Justice, Zhao has focused on investments and education in the field of blockchain, artificial intelligence and science. Binance, which was accused of money laundering and sanctions violations, agreed to pay a $4.3 billion fine and change its management, although Zhao remains the company's majority shareholder.
Changpeng Zhao has repeatedly stated that he no longer intends to return to management, preferring to focus on strategic advice and supporting promising projects.
