Meta, the owner of Facebook (banned in Russia), has laid off over 100 employees at its Reality Labs division. According to sources familiar with the situation, the layoffs affected teams at Oculus Studios, which are developing games for Quest headsets.

Tracy Clayton, a spokeswoman for Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), confirmed that the restructuring affected several projects, including Supernatural, a VR fitness game. Recall that Meta previously acquired Supernatural for more than $400 million and successfully defended the deal from a government attempt to block it through antitrust proceedings.

According to Clayton, the streamlining also affected individual teams at Oculus Studios. She emphasized that these measures are aimed at increasing the efficiency of studios' work on future mixed reality projects, while maintaining a high level of content for current users.

The company's financial reports previously showed serious losses for Reality Labs: in the fourth quarter alone, losses amounted to $4.97 billion with revenue of $1.1 billion. Against the backdrop of these figures, rumors began to spread about the possible closure of the division if the situation does not improve in 2025.

Thus, Meta is betting on a more rational use of resources, hoping to strengthen Reality Labs' position in the promising, but so far unprofitable field of virtual and augmented reality.
