In 2025, Buterin will focus on strengthening the foundations of Ethereum’s infrastructure, including working with decentralized systems and improving them. He emphasized the importance of a long-term approach to solving issues related to the Ethereum mainnet (L1), including problems with single-slot finality, security, stability, and increasing decentralization. Among the priorities are also improving the operation of the Ethereum virtual machine, as well as creating networks that do not require saving state.
In addition, Buterin plans to focus on developing tools to improve privacy and communication on the network. For example, he mentioned the need to improve methods for encrypting messages and documents, as well as further development of prediction markets and related technologies. An important part of his plan is to create new types of communication tools that will serve to simplify interaction in decentralized applications.
Vitalik also drew attention to the importance of working on governance and financing mechanisms for public goods, as well as on the creation of open source products. His plans also include attention to the development of physical infrastructure, cryptography, and operating systems that must be protected from biological threats.
Noting the importance of many areas, Buterin emphasized that he intends to reduce his involvement in several other areas. For example, he plans to devote less time to practical issues of Ethereum scaling in the short term, including increasing the gas limit on L1, as well as research in the field of P2P and block structure. In addition, Buterin indicated that he will not be actively involved in solving many current issues of the Ethereum Foundation and issues related to already established categories such as DeFi, payments, and savings. In his opinion, there are other experts who have a deeper understanding of these issues to work in these areas.
Also in April, the Ethereum Foundation announced it would prioritize improving user experience and addressing L1 scaling issues.
