On May 19, Coinbase shares will officially become part of the S&P 500 index, which will be an important milestone both for the company itself and for the entire cryptocurrency sector. This decision will mark the first entry of the crypto exchange into one of the main US stock indices, displacing Discover Financial Services shares from it.
Amid this news, Coinbase's market capitalization showed significant growth — by the end of the trading session, it increased by 7.9% and reached $52.78 billion. The company's shares rose to $207.22, although this is still below the December maximum of $343.
However, since the beginning of 2025, Coinbase shares are still in the red, demonstrating a decline of 16.54%. For comparison, in April 2021, when the company's shares first began trading, they opened at $381.
While the company is strengthening its position in the market, it is simultaneously working on expanding the range of its services. In March, Coinbase CFO Alecia Haas said that the company's management was negotiating with the SEC on the possible launch of trading in tokenized securities. This direction could open up new prospects for crypto investors and institutional players.
In April, Coinbase confirmed information about a possible application for a federal bank license in the United States. Such a move will allow the company to expand its banking services and increase customer confidence.
And already in May, it became known about the conclusion of a major deal: Coinbase agreed to acquire Deribit, the largest platform for trading bitcoin options. The purchase price was $2.9 billion, which indicates the company's serious intentions to strengthen its position in the cryptocurrency derivatives market.
All this indicates that despite the volatility of shares and the instability of the crypto market, Coinbase continues to strategically develop and integrate into the traditional financial system. Entering the S&P 500 index is further evidence that the crypto industry is becoming an increasingly visible part of the global investment landscape.
