In Argentina, the work of the investigative group that was working on the case of the sharp drop in the LIBRA meme coin has been officially terminated. According to Argentine media, the corresponding decree was signed by President Javier Miley and Minister of Justice Mariano Cuneo Libarona. The reason given is the implementation of all tasks and the transfer of the collected information to the prosecutor's office.
The work of this group began on February 19, 2025. Its main goal was to collect data related to the LIBRA token and interact with judicial structures. According to the government, the investigators have already completed their mission, and the final report is in the hands of prosecutors.
LIBRA was launched on February 14 - on the same day, Miley published a link to the site and the token contract on the X social network. Interest in the coin was caused by the rapid growth of its capitalization to $4.56 billion. However, in just a few days, the asset collapsed in price by 94%.
After this collapse, the president refused to further support the project, stating that he initially did not have full information about it. He also denied the widespread data about 44 thousand affected investors, indicating that there were no more than 5,000 victims.
The scandal caused a strong reaction from the opposition, which initiated impeachment proceedings. The country's chief prosecutor, Eduardo Taiano, demanded the blocking of assets related to LIBRA, worth about $100 million, as well as the restoration of deleted digital traces, including the tweet published by Miley.
In April, parliament voted to launch a parliamentary investigation into the involvement of officials in the situation around LIBRA. However, the initiative was slowed down, as the president's supporters blocked the appointment of the chairman of the commission.
Now, after the official dissolution of the task force, opposition representatives aim to continue the investigation through parliamentary instruments.
Meanwhile, in a civil case against the alleged organizers of LIBRA, the court ordered banks to disclose details of the accounts of Javier Miley and his sister Karina, adding to the resonance of the case.
