In 2025, Louisiana legislators approved the creation of a specialized subcommittee under the House Commerce Committee that will study blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and related technologies. Representative Mark Wright initiated the resolution. The new committee should begin its work before September 1, 2025, and will focus on collecting information, as well as consulting with experts to assess the potential risks and benefits of using modern digital solutions.
An important part of the subcommittee's activities will be open meetings where tech professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, students, and ordinary citizens can communicate. Such events will help create a platform for exchanging knowledge and ideas regarding the use of digital assets. In addition, it is planned to consider the possibility of launching pilot projects to test blockchain and cryptocurrencies on a statewide scale, which will allow testing the effectiveness and security of these technologies in practice.
The subcommittee is to prepare a detailed report by February 1, 2026. The document will reflect the current use of artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cryptocurrency in Louisiana, and analyze the experience of other states in the implementation of these technologies. Particular attention will be paid to cybersecurity, privacy protection, and the economic potential of the Web3 sector. In addition, it is planned to develop recommendations to increase public awareness of digital innovations and security measures when using them. An important task will also be to determine the need to adopt new legislation that will ensure the safe and transparent use of blockchain and digital assets in the daily lives of Louisiana residents.
It is worth noting that interest in cryptocurrencies in the state is not new - five years ago, the first steps were taken to develop a law on licensing cryptocurrency companies. And last year, Louisiana became one of the first states to accept cryptocurrency as payment for government services. The first bitcoin transaction was conducted through the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which was an important step in the development of the digital economy of the region. The creation of the new subcommittee thus reflects Louisiana's commitment to advancing innovative technologies while ensuring their safety and legality, and to expanding opportunities for businesses and citizens in the face of digital transformation.
