The Israeli hacker group Gonjeshke Darande has publicly distributed the full source code of the cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex, the largest in Iran. As a result of this incident, attackers now have the opportunity to access personal data of clients and threaten the security of digital assets. In the statement of the hackers, it is emphasized that all remaining funds in user accounts are under serious threat.
Nobitex, which serves more than 10 million clients and conducts daily operations in the amount of about 11 billion dollars, was forced to temporarily stop the work of both its online platform and mobile applications. This almost completely blocked the trading of cryptocurrencies in Iran and required the company to review its security system at the root level.
In response to the growing risks, the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has imposed restrictions on local crypto exchanges, allowing them to serve clients only from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. This was reported by representatives of the American analytical company Chainalysis. In addition, experts from the Georgia Technological University recorded an almost complete blackout of the Internet in Iran around 17:00, which indicates the authorities' efforts to prevent further cyberattacks and protect critical infrastructure.
This situation demonstrates the high level of threat that cryptocurrency platforms face in the conditions of geopolitical tension and increased cyber resistance. For Nobitex, this means the need to urgently improve mechanisms for protecting users' data and assets, as well as a review of cybersecurity strategies in general.
So far, the extent of the damage and the exact impact of the leak on users remain unknown, but the suspension of the exchange has already had a serious impact on Iran's crypto market, slowing down turnover and limiting the opportunities of investors.
Thus, the incident with the leak of the Nobitex source code became an alarming signal for the entire crypto community, especially for markets with an unstable political environment and high vulnerability to external attacks. In the near future, we can expect further measures from the Iranian regulators and intensification of work to strengthen security in the industry.
