Since its release in May 2023, the ChatGPT mobile app has earned OpenAI about $2 billion. According to Appfigures, iOS and Android users spend dozens of times more on it than on its closest analogues - Claude, Copilot and Grok combined.
The main growth occurred in 2025: in January-July alone, the service generated $1.35 billion in revenue, which is 673% higher than the result for the same period in 2024 ($174 million). The average monthly income was $193 million, which is $25 million more than last year. For comparison, Grok was able to earn only $25.6 million during the same period, that is, less than 2% of ChatGPT's volume.
According to average statistics, each app installation costs users $2.91, and in the US - about $10. The US market accounts for 38% of all OpenAI revenue, making it a key source of profit. Germany took second place in terms of expenses, providing 5.3% of total revenue.
Interest in ChatGPT is also growing in terms of downloads. In total, the app has been downloaded more than 690 million times, with 318 million installations occurring in 2025. This is 2.8 times more than for the same period in 2024. India became the leader in the number of downloads, where 13.7% of all installations were formed. The US is in second place with a figure of 10.3%.
Monthly downloads also showed impressive growth - from 16 million in the first half of 2024 to about 45 million in the current one. This result means an increase of almost 180%.
Experts note that such a significant lag of competitors is also explained by strategic mistakes. For example, Grok from xAI was released in November 2023, but without a mobile version. The iOS app appeared only in January 2025, and the Android version - two months later, which did not allow the service to quickly gain an audience.
Although a significant part of OpenAI's revenue is generated through corporate subscriptions and API use, it was the mobile application that became the main driver of growth and an indicator of the product's popularity among a wide audience.
Thus, the success of ChatGPT confirms the growing interest in artificial intelligence tools and emphasizes OpenAI's leadership against the background of competitors who have not yet managed to catch up with the company in either revenue or user base.
