Mining equipment manufacturer Canaan has unveiled a pilot project in Canada that utilizes energy generated from hard-to-recover natural gas. The center, located in Calgary, Alberta, has a capacity of 2.5 megawatts and is equipped with 700 Avalon A15 Pro mining rigs. The initiative, implemented jointly with Canadian company Aurora AZ Energy Ltd., aims to efficiently utilize resources that are typically burned or left unused.

According to Canaan, using such energy sources not only reduces the carbon footprint but also makes Bitcoin mining more independent of centralized power grids. The complex is modular and includes containerized data processing units, ensuring autonomous operation and sustainability even with limited access to infrastructure.

The company notes that the new installation operates at up to 90% efficiency and enables cryptocurrency mining at below-market energy costs. Canaan CEO Nangeng Zhang emphasized that the combination of local gas generation and computing systems creates the opportunity to convert previously wasted energy into a productive resource.

The project is valued at over $2 million and is part of Canaan's broader strategy to expand its computing capacity. By the end of September 2025, the company's total hashrate reached 9.3 EH/s. The company also signed a contract to supply over 50,000 Avalon A15 Pro units.

Earlier, in March 2025, Canaan received an additional $200 million in funding through the issuance of Series A-1 preferred shares. These funds are used to expand its mining centers and further develop its mining and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company's partners plan to replicate similar energy solutions in other regions with access to hard-to-recover gas but lacking stable connections to centralized grids. Canaan believes this model could play a key role in the future of the industry, where the need for local energy sources and autonomous computing centers for mining and AI is growing.

The company previously unveiled an innovative solution for private users—the Avalon home heating system—highlighting Canaan's commitment to developing energy-efficient technologies and exploring new applications for its equipment.
