The US Department of Justice reported on the destruction of the Qakbot malware and the confiscation of $ 8.6 million in cryptocurrencies.

The US Department of Justice conducted an operation in which the United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Romania and Latvia took measures to destroy Qakbot malware and destroy its infrastructure.

“Qakbot infects victims' computers mainly through emails containing malicious links. Once infected, Qakbot can send ransomware to users' computers. Subsequently, the viruses demand a ransom from their victims in bitcoins, and then return them access to computer networks,” the ministry said in a statement.

During the operation, it was possible to access the Qakbot infrastructure and identify more than 700,000 computers worldwide, including more than 200,000 in the US, which were infected.

The Ministry also said that all $8.6 million that was confiscated will be returned to the victims.

In May, the United States Department of Justice launched an investigation into the Binance cryptocurrency exchange.
