PEPE’s string of failures continues: just a couple of weeks after the theft of tokens from the multisig wallet, attackers hacked a Telegram channel dedicated to the hype memcoin.
The project developer reported the hacking of the channel on Twitter. According to his statement, the channel administrator’s account fell into the hands of attackers who have nothing to do with PEPE.
The project's Telegram channel is used for fraudulent schemes
According to @pepecoineth, attackers hacked a channel to promote scam tokens among members of the PEPE community.
The developer called on his subscribers to take action and report the incident, marking the channel as fake - thanks to collective efforts, it will be noticed by Telegram administrators and subsequently deleted.
Project participants plan to create a new account with increased security measures. Until this moment, all official communications from the project team will be published exclusively on Pepe’s Twitter.
PEPE suffers reputational losses
At the end of August, the price of memcoin plummeted by 20%. The reason for the fall was the actions of former team members who withdrew 16 trillion tokens worth about $15 million from a multi-signature wallet and sold them on centralized exchanges. The coins stored in the wallet were intended for future listings, bridges, and liquidity provision.
Subsequently, @pepecoineth assured followers that he had transferred the remaining 10 trillion tokens from the multisig wallet to a new address.
“The funds are secure and under the control of someone who has the best interests of everyone and PEPE as a whole. They are not available to unscrupulous former team members.”
The developer added that he will retain 10 trillion PEPE while he determines further actions. According to him, he is in talks to acquire some web domains and usernames and plans to donate some of these tokens and burn the remaining coins.
