How Buterin's Account Was Hacked
On September 9th, Vitalik Buterin's Twitter account fell victim to fraudsters who posted a tweet containing a phishing link related to the "memorable NFT minting in honor of the arrival of proto-sharding on Ethereum." As a result, victims of the scam lost over $691,000.
Among the stolen assets were valuable non-fungible tokens (NFTs), including CryptoPunk #3983 and CryptoPunk #1751, valued at 153.62 ETH and 58.18 ETH, respectively.
The following day, on September 10th, Ethereum developer Tim Beiko urged users to remove their phone numbers from their Twitter accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
Loss of $6.3 Million Due to SIM Swapping
A month earlier, Bart Stevens, co-founder of the cryptocurrency fund Blockchain Capital, filed a lawsuit against a hacker who stole $6.3 million in cryptocurrencies from his wallets.
Stevens claims that the miscreant used his phone number to reset passwords and bypass two-factor authentication on several wallets, subsequently "systematically stealing digital assets." The mobile operator of the crypto fund's founder reported suspicious activity only the day after the incident.
