The creator of FarmVille raised $33 million for the development of blockchain games

Gaming startup Proof of Play has completed its seed round, raising $33 million in investments. a16z, Anchorage Digital and Naval Ravikant took part in financing the project developing blockchain games.

The seed round was led by Greenoaks and a16z. Another participant, Naval Ravikant, has invested in Uber and X (formerly Twitter). Other investors include Twitch founders Justin Kahn and Emmett Shear, Mercury, Firebase, Zynga and Alchemy.

Proof of Play is a gaming studio that develops blockchain games. Its founder, Amit Mahajan, is the co-creator of the Facebook social game FarmVille, developed by Zynga. Since its launch in June 2009, it has become one of the most popular games on Facebook and has millions of players.

The studio's Proof of Play statement said that the free-to-play game Pirate Nation will feature players fighting, trading, and searching for the PGLD token to earn "pirate gold." Developers from well-known companies Epic Games, Zynga, EA, Riot Games, Activision, Google, Facebook, Disney and Warner Brothers took part in its creation.

The project team clarified that Pirate Nation was first deployed on Polygon, but at the beginning of 2023 it switched to Arbitrum Nova to reduce network fees.

In May 2023, Axie Infinity appeared in the App Store. Another famous blockchain game, Gods Unchained, has become available on the Epic Games Store.
