Two Canadian teenagers were able to steal more than $4 million in cryptocurrency under the guise of technical support for the Coinbase crypto exchange
Two teenagers in Canada were able to get their hands on $4.2 million in cryptocurrency by posing as technical support for the Coinbase crypto exchange.
Both teenagers managed to accumulate over $ 13 million, the police calculated. However, it is unclear whether the entire amount is the result of fraudulent activities by teenagers. At the time of writing, both teenagers are under investigation due to the theft of just over $ 4 million. Whether the teenagers spent all $ 4 million to buy only one nickname is not specified.
Earlier, the editors wrote that a comprehensive phishing attack was launched against the clients of the American crypto exchange Coinbase. It was first reported by crypto trader Jacob Canfield, who was among the victims. In his opinion, the attack was made possible due to data theft during the hacking of Gemini in 2022, MGM Resorts, Ledger, as well as other companies. With the help of an array of data, attackers seem to create a portrait of the victim based on various leaks and hacks.
As Canfield notes, scammers know not only the name of the victim, but also email, phone number, and can also send letters from the help coinbase.com address. According to Canfield's calculations, at least three dozen clients of the exchange became victims of the scheme. An on-chain investigator under the pseudonym zachxbt believes that the attack on Coinbase customers has been going on since 2022.
