Threatening Demand & Immediate Response
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport received a serious threat via email, promising to detonate the building unless $1 million in Bitcoin was paid. The email sender threatened to explode Terminal 2 within 48 hours if the specified sum in Bitcoin wasn’t transferred, with a final warning promised in the next 24 hours if the demand wasn’t met.
Swift Police Action & Ongoing Investigation
Following the reception of this threatening email, the Quality and Customer Service Department Head at Mumbai International Airport Limited swiftly reported the incident to the police, initiating an investigation. The case is currently under investigation, with charges filed under sections 385 and 505 (1) (b) of the Indian Penal Code for threat and disruption of public order.
Bitcoin-Linked Extortion: A Disturbing Trend
This isn’t the first instance where Bitcoin has been demanded in exchange for preventing a supposed explosion threat. Years ago, an Indian teenager threatened to "blow up" Miami Airport after American authorities refused to track down a scammer who stole approximately $1,000 worth of Bitcoin from the teenager.
