The Internet Computer (ICP) cryptocurrency, developed by Distributed Systems Foundation (DFINITY), has seen a meteoric rise in its value. It can now be acquired for $8.95 per unit, with its market capitalization skyrocketing by over $1 billion in a 24-hour period, reaching a total of $4.03 billion. Daily trading volumes have increased by 250.9%, reaching $399.47 million. Notably, the current price is still 99% lower than its all-time high, which was near $750.
ICP aims to create a decentralized open platform capable of performing computations, storing data, and supporting smart contracts on the internet. One of the co-founders of Internet Computer is Dominic Williams, who serves as the CEO and Chief Architect of DFINITY. Williams, along with Jean Benoît and Timothy Langlois, brings a wealth of experience in cryptography, blockchain development, and decentralized systems. Benoît is a cryptography expert in privacy and anonymity protocols, while Langlois specializes in decentralized systems.
Internet Computer utilizes the Threshold Relay consensus protocol, allowing it to create and maintain decentralized applications and contracts without relying on centralized servers. The platform also offers scalability and high performance for complex computations and large-scale data processing.
ICP cryptocurrency serves as the internal token of the Internet Computer platform, enabling users to pay for services, access computational resources, and participate in platform governance.
