Canadian authorities faced backlash and legal consequences as they unlawfully froze cryptocurrency donations meant to support the protesting truckers involved in the "Freedom Convoy." During the protest, truckers had disrupted traffic in Ottawa, expressing their opposition to mandatory vaccination requirements amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Activists had initiated at least three fundraising campaigns to provide financial aid to the truckers, and sympathetic individuals donated digital assets amounting to over $24 million. However, the Canadian government invoked the "Emergency Act" to block the digital coins and fiat currency sent to the drivers.

The use of the "Emergency Act" in a situation where there were no significant incidents contradicting the Constitution was deemed unreasonable by Judge Richard Mosley. The plaintiffs, including members of public organizations and protest participants, sought to declare the cryptocurrency freeze illegal to prevent similar actions by officials in the future. They successfully won the legal battle against the government. Additionally, the authorities will be required to partially reimburse the legal expenses of dissenters Edward Cornell and Vincent Girsis, whose bank accounts and credit cards were frozen.
