Pavel Durov Announces Ad Revenue Sharing in Telegram Channels

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, has unveiled a new initiative to financially reward owners of Telegram channels for displaying advertisements. This move has sparked significant interest and led to a surge in the value of Telegram Open Network (TON) by 30%.

Expansion of Telegram Ads Platform

Starting from March, the Telegram Ads platform will be accessible to advertisers in nearly 100 new countries. Local users who allow ads in their channels will receive 50% of the revenue generated by the messenger platform.

Payments in TON Cryptocurrency

Durov emphasized that payments for ad revenue sharing will be conducted using the TON blockchain, ensuring swift and secure transactions. The earnings will be distributed in Toncoin, Telegram's native cryptocurrency.

Monetization Potential and Impact on TON Price

Telegram channels collectively amass a trillion views per month, yet only a fraction, 10%, is currently monetized through Telegram Ads. This move is poised to significantly increase monetization opportunities for channel owners and has already caused a nearly 30% surge in the price of TON, reaching $2.8 at the time of reporting according to CoinGecko.

Future Implications

Users receiving Toncoin will have the flexibility to cash out or reinvest in channel promotion and enhancement. This development aligns with Telegram's earlier plans, announced in October 2023, to conduct an IPO in the second or third quarter of 2025.
