Expanding Bitcoin Services in Africa
Strike, a payment app akin to Cash App or Venmo, but utilizing blockchain technology for transactions, has initiated its operations in seven African nations. This move marks a significant expansion for the Chicago-based startup Zap, founded by CEO Jack Mallers. The initial rollout includes Gabon, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.
Facilitating Bitcoin Transactions
Similar to other mobile payment apps, Strike allows users in these African countries to buy and sell bitcoins (BTC) and the US dollar stablecoin (USDT). Additionally, it facilitates fiat currency deposits and withdrawals along with global payments through the Bitcoin Lightning Network, ensuring cost-effective and swift transactions for both domestic transfers and cross-border payments.
Strategic Expansion Plans
This expansion follows Strike's announcement last year about plans to extend its services to over 65 countries, not only focusing on Africa but also targeting Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean. In November, Strike made its services globally available, enabling users in more than 35 countries to purchase BTC through its app, albeit with a 3.9% fee for clients outside the United States.
