Nokia Aims for "Wide Potential of Metaverse" in 2030 Strategy

Nokia, a key player in telecommunications infrastructure, foresees a significant increase in network demand driven by imminent breakthroughs in the metaverse, Web3, and AI. This projection forms a vital component of Nokia's Technology Strategy 2030, which outlines plans to address the evolving market landscape.

Nokia projects a network demand surge of 22–25% from 2022 to 2030, primarily attributed to the widespread adoption of generative AI and virtual reality devices. Federico Guillen, President of Nokia's Network Infrastructure division, elucidated this growth, citing recent mass deployments of such technologies.

In response to these trends, Nokia plans substantial investments in its network equipment and services portfolio. Among the six ecosystems Nokia aims to serve, the Internet of Value receives special attention, emphasizing decentralization, blockchain, and smart contracts. The metaverse remains a focal point for Nokia, with a focus on expanding human potential, spatial computing, and distributed processing.

Nokia's commitment to the metaverse is underscored by initiatives such as establishing dedicated laboratories and conducting large-scale experiments. Notably, Nokia has pioneered network architectures based on digital twins technology, simulating physical objects for prototyping and testing purposes. Real-world applications include assisting aviation specialists in remote airports using augmented reality.

In Finland, Nokia researchers have explored "Metal Humans," digital twins showcasing the metaverse's potential for gamifying employee management. This innovative approach extends beyond visual representation, incorporating internal human traits such as emotions and cognitive states. Practical applications include optimizing team strategies, enhancing safety measures, and boosting productivity.
